About the Program
What is Transitional Kindergarten (TK)?
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is a free, high-quality early learning program offered by the State of California for children who turn five within the state-determined eligibility window. TK gives children an extra year to grow, learn, and build confidence in a developmentally appropriate kindergarten setting. Children who attend TK complete two years of kindergarten-level learning—TK followed by traditional kindergarten—before moving on to first grade. This additional year helps students develop strong academic, social, and emotional skills, setting them up for long-term success in school and beyond.
Why Choose TK?
Research consistently shows that children who participate in high-quality early childhood education experience lasting benefits. Studies from the National Education Association and the National Library of Medicine highlight that children who attend early learning programs are:
- More prepared academically for future grades
- Less likely to repeat a grade
- More likely to graduate from high school
- More likely to earn higher wages as adults
Did you know that about 90% of brain development happens before kindergarten? TK takes advantage of this critical learning window by providing children with enriching, age-appropriate instruction at the time they need it most.
Lawndale Elementary School District proudly supports Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK) as part of our commitment to equity and access. UTK ensures that all children—regardless of income, background, or race—have access to a strong educational foundation.
